What Is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is a procedure wherein one or more teeth are removed from the mouth. Sometimes this is necessary due to decay, advanced periodontal disease or a fracture that cannot be fixed. Other situations requiring an extraction may be due to impaction or poor positioning of a tooth in the mouth. Often, tooth extraction involves the removal of wisdom teeth.

Benefits of Tooth Extractions

Just as there are a variety of reasons for which you may need a tooth extraction, there are also many benefits to this procedure:

  • Improve appearance. Removing teeth that have become problematic allows for further repair or restoration that can improve your smile by correcting imperfections and giving you confidence.
  • Improve dental health. Extracting wisdom teeth or severely decayed teeth can prevent dental problems as well as improve functionality of the teeth.
  • Improve gum health. Oral surgery can make your gums healthier and less susceptible to gum disease.

Are You a Good Candidate for A Tooth Extraction?

At our office, we conduct a comprehensive examination to assess the overall picture of your oral health and how the tooth or teeth in question may compromise current or future conditions. We will work together with you to determine a plan for safe, comfortable tooth extraction to be administered as an outpatient procedure.

FAQs About Tooth Extractions

Does a tooth extraction require stitches?
Following a tooth extraction, stitches may be needed in some cases, although oral stitches are designed to dissolve or come out on their own after the tissue has healed so a return visit to the office is not always needed.
What is a dry socket?
As part of the healing process after a tooth extraction, a blood clot forms in the socket where the tooth was removed as the gum tissue works to repair itself. Occasionally, the blood clot may break down or become dislodged, thus leaving the root socket where the tooth was removed open or exposed. This is known as a dry socket and can cause bleeding or severe pain. If you think you may be experiencing a dry socket, please contact our office for evaluation and treatment.
Will I be awake for a tooth extraction?
The level of sedation used for your tooth extraction will be determined by both the level of complexity of the specific procedure combined with your level of tolerance and comfort. We offer expert administration of various anesthesia techniques, including intravenous (IV) sedation, to alleviate anxiety and ensure a calm and relaxed state during your procedure. With IV sedation, you would be in a sleeping but arousable state, breathing spontaneously, and most likely unable to remember the procedure itself.
Is tooth extraction covered by insurance?
Coverages vary greatly from carrier to carrier and policy to policy, so what may be covered for one patient may not be covered for another. For this reason, we recommend contacting your insurance carrier to discuss the specifics of your individual coverage. If the procedure is deemed medically necessary for dental or oral health reasons, then odds are more likely that it will be covered. Procedures deemed to be cosmetic are typically not covered. Our office is here to assist you in making sense of your plan and determining subsequent options for payment.
